Recommended Profile for Ethiopian Yirgacheffe?

Hi All,

Any particular recommendations for profile & roast level for Ethiopian Yirg?
I haven't roasted or drunk much of it for a while, but coming back to it. I drink both black filter (aeropress & V60) and also flat whites (brewed on a Profitec Pro500).

I just tried 3 profiles and cupped them:
- 1500-2000 GTTT (end 221 @ 8:29]
- Ninja Turtle [end 222 @ 925]
- my own slowed down version of Raost (from Benjamin) [end 219 @ 7:51]

They were all similar, but didn't WOW me...
My blind cupping results put Raost as #1, Ninja Turtle #2 and 1500+ in third place (least bright, fruity). I haven't tried it yet, but I suspect that Ninja Turtle will probably be best as Espresso...

Here's a log of the Raost version with K-logic Classic in the background for reference. It's really very similar in shape to the 1500+, but pushes higher in 1-3min zone before 1500+ takes over (just!).

Don't have a great answer but keen on hearing what others have to say. Perhaps the D-roast of filter-origin could good options.

And that's how we figure out which is more suited :geek:

I also recently picked up some Yirgacheffe. Have only done the one roast with the 1500-2000m stock profile but it tasted a bit flat to how I used to roast it with a heat gun.

I'm going to give it a go with Filter Origin next.

Let me know how you go!

Also, if you want to try it, here's the profile for the Log above...

I just searched back through my roasting log and noticed I have used Filter-Origin with Yirg. Only did it once.
It looks like it had a huge flick up around FC... not sure why.

Ran some Yirgacheffe with Filter Origin.

It's definitely better than the 1500-2000m profile, but still doesn't bring out the fruit notes out to the degree I'd expect.

@kidleethal, Interesting

I found the same when using the filter-origin for Ethiopian Sidamo Ardi. I cupped it alongside the MASL profile, ninja turtle, and Raost V4. I found filter origin a bit too light in flavour and body although I did get the fruity hints I was after if I really focused.

I kept on going back to Raost V4 over and over. I have not yet landed on my preferred roast depth but the default works beautifully for a light style longer Espresso. I suspect a DTR of 17% or so might do wonders for filter brewing.

There is also a fast Raost that I suspect would bring out more acidity although have not yet attempted it.

After letting it rest for a few more days, am definitely getting a lot more pleasant acidity and fruitiness coming through with the Filter Origin L1.2 roast I did. It's a clear improvement over the default altitude profiles.

You're right it does lack a bit of body, but works very well for the cloth filter pourover I'm using it for.

Will give Raost a go next!
