Early stages of bean movement with small batch sizes

When checking bean movement with a 50 gram batch, the beans sit well below the probe, of course. They also don't tumble, merely spin very fast in a circle; no beans lift or even seem to leave their position in the circle. Eventually, the beans do expand a bit & some lifting & shifting can then take place as the roast progresses. But this is all very different than the initial tumbling of green beans in a larger batch size (80 to 120 g)
Question: Is this initial "spinning without tumbling" A-OK?

Hey Jojo,

This is normal, it is mainly because there aren't enough beans to lock together and push air up and through, lifting them into a tumble. This is normal for them to just spin for the first half of the roast. only thing to keep in might is watch your airflow, at the very bottom of the batch sizing I sometimes find that I need to dial back slightly on airflow. Usually you should be good to go, just see how it tastes and go from there.

No problems with this.
