Recording First Crack!

#503

Post by Mark »

G’day all, I had a bit of a play around with a sound recorder app (Boson) and recorded the Nano while roasting Uganda Bigisu using the Ninja profile…..just to see if it would record first crack…..and it worked ha ha!

You can see FC at 7.15 minutes and subsequent cracks.
Also notice small outliers at 6.27 & 7.10 minutes.

This is really interesting to see the visual representation. Thanks for sharing!

May be BT App comes with auto mark for FC and FC-End by analysing sound pattern ?
May be bitt too much geek up... :D

Thanks for the tip!

I have Kubuntu Linux and I think I can try to record with Audacity as I still think 1C is interesting :? . It has a visual live representation of the recording.

But when does 1C actually start? We use to say not the first crack but thre cracks in succession. Is it possible to see that?

Great idea !
I think running an RTA is good method to measure frequencies of the FC.
I will try it with a calibrated mic

Had another play with recording roasts. (Rwanda Nyungwe A)

Did 3 x 100g roasts ... aim was to have all 3 roast to 217C end temp.
Profiles used: Filter Origin, Steve's Filter, NinjaTurtle.

Filter Origin & Steve's Filter both had FC around 204c ... whereas NinjaTurtle FC was around 208c.

Was amazed to visually see the FC difference ... The filter Origin FC was at 7:10 min and seemed to be all over by 8:10 min.

Steve's Filter FC was 5:46 Min and was over by around 7:30 min.

NinjaTurtle Fc was 7:32 min 8:32 min ... but seemed a lot more intense!

Looking forward to trying them in a few days.

Cheers Mark
