Recovering stuck/canceled roast?

#3528

Post by keflavich »

Are there any roast profiles that could be used to recover a roast that got aborted partway?

I had a roast that was aborted with 'Thermal Runaway' a few minutes in. The beans had just started to yellow, but first crack was still minutes away.

I have had this happen too. I just reran the same profile fairly quickly after the failure. I think it is helpful to avoid a repeat failure if you do a reset of memory first. Obviously it is not ideal, but the coffee was drinkable!

I was worried that doing that would result in over-roasting the beans, but I'm not sure how adaptive the profiles are. If it just drives up to the same temperature, but the beans are already half-baked, are they going to end up charred? I'll probably just try it and see, but your experience @Ron in Van at least gives me some confidence that it's worth trying. Thanks!
