The supplied cable is nothing special, just a standard USB 2.0 cable. When connecting to a laptop that has only USB-C connectors we prefer to use a standard USB C to C cable if available. Adapters can be flaky. We don't have specific experience with Thunderbolt cables, but your experience suggests they won't work. In my personal experience good quality adapters can be very reliable, and poor quality adapters very flaky and to be actively avoided. I suggest you further experiment with type C cables and adapters.
WiFi is coming later this year, with an entirely new can of worms, hopefully more palatable!
